Baby, we've come a long way. From bricks to candy bars, from flip phones to touch-screens, the evolution of the cellular phone has had a profound impact on the way we communicate with each other, the ways in which we conduct our daily lives and how we function within society.
But mobile phones and mobile devices (such as the new Apple iPad revealed yesterday) are much more than just distractions while you drive your car or watch a movie...they are a way to maximize spare-time spent riding the bus, obtain instant gratification of trivia facts when in a dispute, and find the nearest location for a happy-hour in downtown Seattle.
Furthermore, they are a wild-wild-west for marketers to embark upon - creating new challenges and new opportunities to reach a target audience.
I recently stumbled upon this article by Alan D. Mutter (highly established former newspaper editor and speculator of new-media ventures), outlining some ways in which businesses may profit from the fresh landscape provided by the newly released iPad.
He suggests marketers, designers, programmers and developers should...
Invigorate the way in which we embrace this new media - utilize technological advancements to push the boundaries of how we interact with products, websites, advertisements, etc.
Integrate various tools to become as useful as possible to whoever you are trying to connect with. As more technological advancements emerge, the more clutter we'll have to sift through to find something truly useful. Take a hint from Google and make your mobile application a one-stop-shop.
Triangulate and connect the dots. Although it may not be the most pleasant thing to think about, websites and companies collect information about their consumers so they may tailor the products and services they market to them.
Curate the onslaught of information. Sensory overload is a very real side-effect of the flurry of information being delivered to each of us. It's survival of the fittest, and the fittest no doubt will know what to bother people with.
Propagate the landscape with new, exciting and (perhaps most importantly) valuable advancements.
But above all,
Celebrate this exciting time in technology!
