Walking down NE 8th Street in Bellevue today, I saw a guy waving a sign advertising "Guns & Ammo" for a discount gun shop one block from our office. I laughed thinking that the cut-rate firearms store doesn't seem to fit in clean-as-a-whistle, "I got it at Neiman's" downtown Bellevue.
When I returned to my desk, I found an e-mail from those on the other side of the Second Amendment issue. The Brady Campaign was urging folks to sign a petition encouraging Starbucks to bar the open carrying of guns in its stores.
Interested in the process, I checked it out, and was impressed with the way they've got the viral component of their efforts dialed in. Once you fill in a couple of fields and click through, you're given the opportunity to go one simple step further and spread the word to friends through e-mail, Twitter and Facebook.

Many marketers still feel like they're feeling their way around in the dark when it comes to social media, but what a powerful weapon it can be for shooting your message to the masses.
