Branding a forest
The Teanaway Community Forest is a place where conservation, sustainable forestry, and recreation come together. Established as Washington’s first state-owned community forest, the beautiful 50,241-acre landscape lies at the headwaters of the Yakima Basin watershed. The forest contains nearly 400 miles of free-flowing streams and prime habitat for fish and wildlife. It has a history of grazing and timber harvests and offers unique recreation opportunities.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) collaboratively manages the Teanaway Community Forest with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) with significant public input from a community-based advisory committee. We worked with this group of stakeholders to develop a logo as well as interpretive panels that explain the history and collective goals for the forest. “GA Creative took the wheel on making sure that we stayed engaged the whole way,” said Nicky Pasi, Community Coordinator for Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.
By following the brand attributes identified by the advisory committee—partnership, restoration, preservation, and gateway—the logo features the beauty of Mt. Stewart, which you can see from everywhere in the forest, along with trees, in a badge-style logo. The colors were selected to reflect the blues and greens predominant in nature, along with a pop of yellow, iconic of larch trees in fall.

The panels fit within the rustic, natural setting, explaining the succession of human settlement in the area along with the unique land management model of a community forest today.
